This week’s featured book for the Virtual Book Club for Kids is How I Became a Pirate by Melina Long and illustrated by David Shannon. In this fun picture book, we follow the adventure of Jeremy Jacob as he joins a pirate crew. He learns to talk, eat and act like a pirate but then discovers all of the things that pirates don’t do.

Pirate and How I Became a Pirate Themed Activities for Preschoolers

We have picked 5 easy activities based on this theme. Pick the one that appeals to you the most, try a few or if you are looking for more structure for your days then check out our weekly suggested schedule and plan to try all 5.

Pirate Imaginative Play for the book How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long

For our play activity this week we are making pirate boats. We’ve found 2 different versions one for those that like getting crafty and the other for a quicker and less messy version. The creative one is a Cardboard Box Boat and the less messy a Laundry Basket Boat.

If you do this activity we would love to see your kids doing it – don’t forget to share either in our Facebook Group or over on Instagram tagging us with @virtualbookclubforkids.

Alphabet Activity for Pirate Week

We’re going on a treasure hunt for our alphabet activity this week.

Depending on where your child is learning their alphabet you may want to focus on specific areas of letters. Younger children may just want to dig for the letters in their name similar to the sensory play activity from our Name Week. Those that are learning letters could match as the activity suggests.

And those with more knowledge why not give them lower case but match up the upper case or ask to sort into vowels and consonants. There are lots of different possibilities jump into our group and ask if you are looking for more ideas on how to adapt this to your child.

Math Activity for the Theme of Pirates

We’re going to make our own pirate math activity and use it for counting, sorting or posting. This is simple to make and if you haven’t got a wipes container then an egg carton or similar flip top box would work just as well.

Find out how to make your own treasure chest for math and count your gold coins into it. Not got any gold coins then why not paint some stones gold and use them instead as gold nuggets.

Pirate Themed Science Activity

A pirate ship needs to float when it’s empty of treasure as well as when it’s full.

Instead of a recipe this week we’ve got a little science challenge for your preschoolers to try. Can they fill their pirate boats with treasure and keep them afloat?

Join them in the challenge and see who can keep the pirate boats afloat with the most treasure.

Art Activity for the Pirate Theme and How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long

Every pirate needs a parrot so for our Art & Craft activity for pirate week we are Making our own Parrot out of a Paper Cup.

Pirate Week at the Virtual Book Club for Kids Featuring How I Became a Pirate plus 5 fun activities for preschoolers to play, learn and create with.
